All Nursing applicants will be required to take the Kaplan computerized entrance exam at a cost of $20 (payable at exam time). This exam is a 91 question, online, multiple-choice exam that evaluates the basic reading, math, writing, science and critical thinking skills of candidates seeking entry into a nursing program leading to RN licensure. Total testing time is up to 165 minutes. There are four separately-timed sections:
- Reading 22 questions 45 minutes
- Math 28 questions 45 minutes
- Writing 21 questions 45 minutes
- Science 20 questions 30 minutes
The Admissions Committee will give priority consideration to the candidates who earn a score of 85% or higher on each of the four sections of the exam as well as the critical thinking section. Candidates who score below 70% are urged to consider retaking it, if eligible. (Candidates who take the exam in December 2019, are eligible to retake the exam ONCE in late January 2020. Candidates who take the exam for the first time in January are not eligible for a retake during the same application year. Individuals are permitted four lifetime attempts. After four attempts, additional exam scores will not be considered for admission to EMCC’s Nursing program. Exam scores are kept on file for three years.)
The Admissions Office does not have study materials available for the exam; however, the EMCC Library does have some on hand to lend. Additionally, the Follett Bookstore has some available to purchase. The Kaplan Study Guide (available at local bookstores or through Amazon.com) is called Kaplan Nursing School Entrance Exams: Your Complete Guide to Getting Into Nursing School - Seventh Edition by Kaplan (ISBN 9781618656025). Please note the text is for all nursing entrance exams and includes more information than is on this specific admissions test: The Kaplan Nursing School Entrance Exam.
Candidates are strongly urged to take the pre-admission exam as soon as practical. Additional test dates will NOT be added (with the exception of extenuating circumstances such as inclement weather) so it is advised that candidates select a test date early and make every attempt to keep their date. A confirmation of the date selected will be emailed within 48 hours of receiving the request (Mon-Fri). Candidates are NOT permitted to schedule two test dates at a time. Those who test in December will have an opportunity to retest in January if their score is below the recommended percentile.
If you do not meet the program prerequisites and cannot complete them prior to the deadline, it is not advisable for you to take the pre-admission exam. Please contact the Admissions Office at email@example.com for advice.
Examinees who require testing accommodations due to a disability should contact the Accessibility Services Coordinator at 207-974-4868 or firstname.lastname@example.org. In order for us to make appropriate accommodations, the appropriate forms must be on file prior to scheduling a date to test. Students requiring certain accommodations may find an alternate test date more conducive.
